Rub Off Patternmaking

Have you ever wanted to Make a Pattern from a Pre-loved Garment, so you could remake it in a new color and fabric? Then this class is for you, as we'll bring new life to an old piece!
We'll learn how to,
  • Select a Vintage piece that may have deteriorated fabric, yet a valuable silhouette, or a garment that you love that you want to recreate in your own choice of fabrics
  • Analyze and Prepare it for rubbing off
  • Make a pattern from it
  • Modify select details, such as adding pockets
  • Cut it in another fabric

  • Demo: In our first class I'll show the technique, so you'll see specific supplies you may wish to buy for the next class.
  • Sewing: Students may need to sew their garment outside of class time. The primary focus of this class will be on patternmaking technique.
Supplies You will need to bring:
  • Your Sewing Kit- silk pins, pin cushion, sewing needles, fabric scissors (sharp and good quality), tailors chalk, thread, tape measure and a carrying case.
    • Pins:  please bring fine quality pins.  There are some pins on the market that are like nails!  There is nothing worse than working with poor supplies.
  • A Garment in a Woven Fabric: Please note that Knits are more advanced and not recommended for this class. Please press it so it's presentable, not wrinkled.
    • Keep it simple.  Ideal items are 3-4 pattern pieces in basic fabric, like a skirt or top.  No suits and no winter coats.
  • New fabric to cut your new garment.
    • Keep it Light!  We need to be able to see all construction details, so dark colored fabrics are more challenging.
  • Contrasting thread, red or blue.
  • Mechanical Pencil
  • Long 18" Ruler: *I will bring all these supplies that we can share, yet it's ideal if students bring what they have.
  • French curve #17: PlusI will bring a hip curve and a T-square, as many students may not have these.
